Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS) is a nonprofit organization that provides settlement and integration services to all immigrants and refugees in Calgary and Southern Alberta. With over 45 years of solid community experience, 90 active programs, and comprehensive wraparound support, CCIS ensures that our services respond to the needs of ethnically diverse communities within Calgary and the area.
The Correctional Services Division (CSD) is required to provide programs and services to address the needs of Young Persons in conflict with the law. Community Corrections Offices support Young Persons under the Youth Criminal Justice Act as they progress through major transitional points during the community portion of their sentence.
CCIS’s Family & Children Services Division is looking for our next two Cultural Brokers for Youth and is accepting applications from qualified job seekers!
Program Description:
The CCIS Correctional Cultural Brokers will support CSD with their organizational and service capacity needs to ensure that youth and their families receive culturally responsive and appropriate support when involved with CSD.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Act as the liaison between Youth Probation Officers, newcomer Young Persons and their Families, and Community Service Providers
- Provide cultural interpretation throughout case management
- Educate Young Persons and parents on Youth Criminal Justice Act and systems expectations in Canada
- Support Youth Probation Officers in assessing client’s needs
- Refer Young Persons to community programs for support
- Assist Youth Probation Officers in delivering culturally responsive services
- Respond to Young and Youth Probation Officers’ questions and inquiries
- Collaboration with Youth Probation Officers, Justice and community partners
- Support Young Persons in reducing their interactions with the criminal justice system
- Conduct comprehensive case management
- Ensure regular follow-up with both Youth Probation Officers and Young Persons
- Support the preparation of court reports
Qualifications:
- Minimum of an Undergraduate Degree in Social Work or a relevant field
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience and/or education in settlement services
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience and/or education in working with Youth
- Experience related to child development, family violence, and/or sexual abuse would be considered an asset
- Lived experience and working knowledge of the settlement and integration process
- Established knowledge of community resources and agencies that support newcomer populations
- Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of culturally responsive interventions
- Understanding and appreciation of the complex needs of diverse populations
- Knowledge of the various ethnocultural and faith groups in Calgary
- Effective and dynamic communication and facilitation skills
- Experience and ability to collaborate effectively with the community
- Excellent organization skills and self-starting tendencies
- Advanced computer skills
- May require working after hours and weekends
- Preference will be given to candidates connected to Syrian, Ethiopian, and Eritrean ethnocultural communities and groups
- Preference will be given to candidates who speak Arabic, Amharic, Oromo, and Tigrinya
- As travel is required, the successful candidate must have a vehicle and a valid driving license
- A valid certified criminal record check (fingerprint-based criminal record check) is required
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
