For over 30 years, Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids (BB4CK) has been dedicated to ensuring every child in our city has access to the food they need to thrive. Together with our BB4CK community— volunteers, parents, school staff, and donors—we connect kids to nutritious meals through school lunches and summer camps, and by supporting families with grocery cards. Position: Director of Programming
This role is a key contributor to BB4CK’s leadership structure, providing support and oversight to the program direction and delivery aspects of the organization. The individual in this role will spend their time considering the future of programming that addresses food insecurity, where BB4CK’s current and future offerings can be most effective, and how the organization might organize around this work. The Director of Programming will be curious and innovative, ready to bring and open to new ideas, and committed to exploring the best ways to work toward identified outcomes. They will be driven by the voices of people who have lived and living experience of food insecurity and guided by data that measures our impact.

The successful candidate will have experience with program planning and delivery while also being open to new ideas and perspectives. They will be excited to lead programming at an organization that is building on a solid foundation and exploring emerging opportunities to address food insecurity. They will be skilled at reinforcing what works while simultaneously exploring opportunities.

Responsibilities of the Director of Programming include the following:
Whole Organization

  • Be responsible for own health and wellness, personally and professionally, and take ownership to ensure you are able to perform this role as needed.
  • Contribute wholeheartedly to BB4CK’s vision and mission.
  • Work effectively on tasks assigned within the context of BB4CK values and culture.
  • Any duties not listed below that may be required to ensure the success of the team.

Leadership

  • Contribute to the overall organizational strategy and direction.
  • Act as a support to the organization overall.
  • Act as a culture and values ambassador for the organization.

Director Team
 

  • Champion a culture of people-focused leadership that energizes, engages, and empowers team members through strong support.
  • Promote and facilitate communication and collaboration between team members and the full BB4CK team.
  • Identify community, sector, and organizational trends and needs, and strategize opportunities to maximize strengths or address gaps.
  • Responsibilities relating to strategic planning development & oversight.
  • Responsibilities relating to budget development & oversight.
  • Responsibilities relating to the development of Team Leads.
  • Support the Board of Directors.
  • Together with the Leadership Team, contribute to and engage others in contributing to the organization’s vision and strategic planning.
  • Together with the Leadership Team, contribute to and engage others in contributing to the organization's annual business plans.
  • Contribute to the organization's risk management framework and mitigation plans.

Programming

  • Provide vision and overall direction for BB4CK's program delivery, working from a participant-informed, human-centered lens.
  • Support cohesive program design and evaluation across all BB4CK school, family, and community programs.
  • Support current programming deliverables, accountable for overall strategy and outcomes.
  • From time to time, lead and support special projects.
  • Support Team Leads in program planning and strategy.
  • Provide direct support to K-12 Programs and Family Engagement and Evaluation Team Leads and teams.
  • As appropriate, lead and/or support the development of policies that impact programming.
  • Provide broad financial oversight for programming.
  • Support the continued development of robust and engaging volunteer programming.
  • As needed, participate in conversations with donors, funders, volunteers, or others in the community interested in supporting programming.
  • Support team members in developing and maintaining strong and productive relationships with all external partners.
  • Support team members in working cohesively with other departments in the organization.

Kitchen Team Support

  • All employees of BB4CK are expected to offer their support in our kitchen spaces as needed while managing their own capacity and schedules throughout their employment.

Other Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills, visionary thinking, and experience related to the food insecurity and/or poverty reduction sector.
  • Experience related to innovation and change management is an asset.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Education and Experience     

  • 5-7years mid-level experience working with a team and 2-3 years leading a team.
  • 5+ years of education and/or experience related to community engagement, program delivery, and participant-informed programming.
  • Experience working with various evaluation frameworks and models.

What We Offer
BB4CK offers a competitive total compensation approach to support the physical, psychological, cultural, and financial well-being of our people. Base salary is calculated at the 50th percentile of market value, with additional benefits equivalent to over $18,000.
