Summary

Luna Child and Youth Advocacy Centre provides children and families experiencing issues of child abuse access to investigative, intervention, treatment and medical assessment services and follow up support. The Family Support Coordinator .5 will help to ensure that families who come through the Centre receive support, advocacy, information and resources through the disclosure and investigation processes.

Description

Reporting to the Manager of Victim Services and Integrated Practice, the Family Support Coordinator will provide support to families coming to the Luna Child and Youth Advocacy Centre (LCYAC) with information and resources through the entire disclosure and investigative processes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Family, Caregiver and Victim Contact

  • Provide children and families with accurate information on the Victims’ Bill of Rights.
  • Contact person for the children and families who are attending the LCYAC for their initial visit.
  • Work closely with Victim Support Volunteer Advocates to provide emotional support to caregivers during their visit to the LCYAC
  • Ensure adequate resources are provided to families during and after their visit to Luna.

Ongoing Support

  • Ensure families are provided with ongoing emotional support, information and resources after initial contact has been made with the families.
  • Advocate for resources and services where families face barriers to access.

 Collaborative Model Approach

  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team including; Calgary Police Service, RCMP, Children’s Services, Alberta Health Services, and Alberta Justice along with community agencies to set up appropriate supports for children and their families who have been impacted by child abuse; become a primary contact for investigative agency partners to collaborate in order to ensure families receive support in a timely and purposeful manner.

Administration

  • Manage the Victim Support calendar to ensure adequate support is being provided to families attending the LCYAC for appointments.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and statistics for reporting purposes.

Volunteer Management

  • Assist with the management of daily scheduling and duties of the Victim Support Volunteer Advocates.
  • Provide guidance to the Victim Support Volunteer Advocates on daily queries and concerns.
  • Participate and support in the development of training for the Victim Support Volunteer Advocates.

               
Education, Qualifications and Skills Required:

Education & Experience

  • A degree or diploma within Social Work or Criminal Justice.
  • 3+ years of direct experience in Victim Services, frontline Social Work related roles, or court related experience.
  • Experience working with a multidisciplinary team an asset.
  • Prior experience working and supporting volunteers.

  • Interest and enthusiasm in working with children and families.
  • Commitment to the philosophy of the Victim Support program, its objectives and goals.
  • Ability to work effectively in both a team environment and independently.
  • Ability to accept direction and supervision in the application of skills and knowledge required.
  • Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
  • Maturity, reliability and punctuality.
  • Strong emphasis on listening skills.
  • Ability to work well with people from all backgrounds and cultures.
