Luna Child and Youth Advocacy Centre is looking for a passionate individual dedicated to supporting Indigenous children, youth and families. The Indigenous Liaison will champion the needs of Indigenous families who attend the Centre and ensure that families receive support, advocacy and information during the disclosure, investigation and judicial processes. The Indigenous Liaison plays a vital role in supporting Luna's commitment to reconciliation and diversity.

This position will be focused on providing targeted services to ensure that Indigenous children, youth and families who are victims of crime receive culturally appropriate services, case management, advocacy, resources and information as they navigate the justice system.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Support for Victims and Families:

  • Provide Treaty 7 children, youth and families impacted by child abuse with the ongoing supports required through the investigative, judicial, and healing process.
  • Attend court with families to support them through the judicial process.
  • Ensure families receive culturally responsive support in a timely and purposeful manner through direct case management and consultation.
  • Provide outreach support to clients for client safety and engagement.
  • Keep accurate documentation and statistics for reporting.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team: Calgary Police Service, RCMP, Children’s Services, Alberta Health Services, and Alberta Justice along with community agencies.
  • Maintain and build relationships and connections with indigenous specific serving agencies to ensure Indigenous families are aware of and able to access the supports they may need.
  • Assist Luna team members and volunteers with collaboration and consultation on cases 

 Qualifications and Skills Required:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Indigenous Peoples history, language, cultures and communities.
  • An understanding of the harms of colonization, systemic racism and the generational impact of the Residential School System.
  • Knowledge of community resources and agencies that support Indigenous people.
  • Familiarity with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) calls to action.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous healing practices.
  • Indigenous language specific to geographical area (For example, Nakoda, Dene, Blackfoot) is an asset.
  • Experience working in the criminal justice system, court procedure and processes and Victim Services is considered an asset.
  • Experience working for and with Indigenous communities.
  • Experience in gifting and cultural protocols and exposure to ceremony.
  • Working in Victim Services, direct social services, or court related work experience is considered an asset.
  • Have a demonstrated agility to build and maintain relationships in the Indigenous community.
