Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Assistant is responsible for ensuring our buildings and equipment are maintained in good working order as we work towards our vision of a hunger-free community.

Last year (September 1, 2021, to August 31, 2022), The Calgary Food Bank distributed 141,206 emergency food hampers, rescued 10.8 million pounds of food and our fleet of 13 vehicles travelled 274,200 kms. Every day, our  programs rely on our buildings and equipment to serve families, individuals and organizations to fight hunger. We are hiring an experienced, mechanically inclined Maintenance Assistant to join our team!

Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Assistant is responsible for ensuring our buildings and equipment are maintained in good working order as we work towards our vision of a hunger-free community.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conducting routine inspections of premises and equipment.
  • Performing preventative maintenance.
  • Handling basic repairs and maintenance.
  • Overseeing contractors when professional repairs are necessary.

Tasks Performed:

  • Diagnosing mechanical issues and correcting them.
  • Completing minor repair work, which includes repairing doors, locks, door frames and handles as well as replacing light bulbs, sockets, switches.
  • Performing basic plumbing tasks, which include unclogging drains as well as fixing leaking faucets and toilets.
  • Basic inspection: control panels and electrical wiring to detect any issues that require immediate attention.
  • Taking inventory of maintenance supplies and notifying the manager of low or depleted supplies.
  • Promptly responding to requests for emergency repairs and clean-ups.
  • Ensuring that all maintenance equipment is in good working order.
  • Replacing bulbs and ballasts in light fixtures to repair leaking sinks and toilets, complete minor repairs to various equipment and facilities to ensure ongoing operations of a facility. This responsibility also includes inspecting equipment and systems for preventive maintenance reasons.
  • Move furniture and equipment as directed. The ability needed to perform these tasks by using hand trucks, forklifts, and other tools and to follow safety guidelines pertaining to lifting, pushing and pulling heavy objects.
  • To keep accurate and up-to-date records about repairs and cleaning schedules. Will also be responsible for maintaining inventory of necessary parts, cleaning supplies and other materials needed to perform their job duties.
  • Perform basic maintenance and repairs to electrical, plumbing, HVAC, painting, refrigeration, and carpentry.
  • Perform other duties as required

Education and Experience Required:

  • High school diploma required, relevant post-secondary education and 1-2 years of relevant experience.
  • Trades experience (or certification) in HVAC, plumbing, or electrical would be an asset.
  • Training through BOMA is considered an asset
  • Understanding the specific infrastructure needs of a warehouse
  • Experience with precision measuring instruments or electronic testing devices.
  • Experience performing routine maintenance.
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft 365 is required (SharePoint, Word, Excel).
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license.

  • Strong organizational and follow up skills
  • Must be able to see tasks through to completion. Ability to make recommendations that will impact efficiency and help to reduce operating costs. The ability to embrace and use technology is also an asset.
  • Excellent knowledge of safety principles and practices required. Ability to adhere to OH&S legislation is mandatory.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
This is a regular, full-time position working 40 hours per week (including a half hour unpaid lunch break) 5 days a week, 8 hours per day. The successful candidate must be open to working outside of normal business hours and weekends. Working conditions are normal for an office and warehouse environment. You must be able to be on your feet for most of the day and be able to lift up to 50lbs.
