Summary

The Parent Advocate plays a vital role in the Coordinated Access, Response and Empowerment (C.A.R.E) team as part of the ConnectFASD program. The Parent Advocate works closely with parents who have been diagnosed with or are suspected of having Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). The role involves providing strength-based and relational support to build strong family relationships, aiming to prevent and navigate secondary challenges that may arise from the complexities associated with FASD.

Accountabilities

Assessment and Planning

· In conjunction with the Intake Team, support the development of individualized C.A.R.E plans in collaboration with the client to meet their needs.

· Regularly review and update C.A.R.E plans to reflect process and changing needs.

 

Case Management

· Provide strength-based support to parents with FASD, focusing on building strong relationships within the family.

· Assist parents in identifying and navigating potential secondary harms associated with FASD, such as mental health issues, addictions, homelessness, poverty, and disability.

· Offer guidance and support in implementing effective parenting strategies tailored to the unique needs of parents with FASD.

· Provide assistance in developing and implementing regulation strategies to help parents.

· Offer practical guidance and support to parents in managing day-to-day tasks and responsibilities.

· Serve as a strong advocate for individuals with FASD to ensure their needs are understood and met within their communities.

· Support parents in navigating various systems, including healthcare, education, social services, income support and legal systems, to access necessary resources and services

· Facilitate connections with community resources and support networks to enhance the overall well-being of the family.

· Monitor service delivery and follow-up to ensure that clients receive appropriate and timely interventions.

 

Documentation and Compliance:

· Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of client care plans, progress notes, and service provision.

· Maintain strict adherence to privacy laws and ethical guidelines regarding the handling of sensitive client information, obtaining all necessary consents for the sharing of information with other professionals or agencies as part of the care coordination process.

· Prepare written reports and documentation for internal purposes, funding agencies, and regulatory bodies as required.

Qualifications

· Diploma in Health, Social Services or related field or equivalent experience.

· Knowledge and understanding of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and its impact on individuals and communities.

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish trust with clients and families.

· Compassionate, empathetic, and nonjudgmental approach to working with the community.

· Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.

· Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a commitment to collaboration and cooperation.

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, project management software, and other relevant tools.

· Must have a driver's license, own a vehicle, and $2 million in vehicle liability insurance.

Working conditions

Parent Advocates work a 36-hour fixed, salaried position of 4 days per week. The working location for this position is on-site in the office, in the community, and in client homes, with Advocates working a minimum of 2 days per rotation in the office. The position will require evening and weekend work. Travel is required within the greater Calgary region to support clients. Work is fast-paced, with multiple projects and objectives in motion and will require moderate physical activity. Some activities may require moving up to 40 lbs.
