Description

The Agency
The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) is a charity that reduces crime and makes Calgary communities safer by helping youth and adults make positive changes and move away from criminal behaviour. We do this by addressing the root causes of crime through housing, education, employment programs and support so that individuals have alternatives to breaking the law. CJHS is committed to restorative justice and an organizational environment that recognizes the dignity and worth of each person. CJHS values diversity and inclusion and welcomes qualified applicants from all walks of life.
The Program
Bedford House is a Community Residential Facility (CRF) for males on a conditional release. It has 32 apartments and utilizes an independent living model while providing support, intensive case management and connections to appropriate community services. Practices are rooted in the CJHS Practice Framework Principles of trauma-informed care, cultural respect and inclusion, restoration and transformation, natural supports and social inclusion and harm reduction. Bedford House works closely with our funder and partner the Correctional Service of Canada, to ensure the residents have the appropriate support and supervision to make positive changes and address the factors contributing to their criminal behaviours. Bedford House also supports individuals who are facing deportation through the Community Case Management and Supervision program, individuals over the age of 18 under an Intensive Rehabilitative Custody and Supervisor (IRCS) order, and Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) clients who have a history of incarceration or criminal involvement.
Building Bonds in Community (BBiC) works with men who have a history of incarceration and provides the opportunity to receive peer support and build social skills to cultivate meaningful relationships and purpose in the lives of the participants. The program seeks to create impactful connections between volunteers and participants, as well as among participants.
