Volunteer and Community Engagement Coordinator
(*NEW*)
A Provincial Youth Justice Committee (YJC) Volunteer and Community Engagement Coordinator is required to support First Nation, Metis, Northern, Central, and Southern Alberta Youth Justice Committees (YJCs). This position is a new and evolving position that will work with and strengthen Alberta YJCs. The coordinator will work 35 hours per week with an ability to work from home and in the evening. Travel around Alberta may be required and the successful candidate is not required to reside in Calgary.

About Youth Justice Committees
Youth Justice Committees use restorative practices to offer young people an alternative to the court system. Community volunteers bring together young people, their families, victims, and justice system representatives to address harm, encourage accountability, and find meaningful ways to move forward. Through open dialogue and community-based resolutions, these committees support healing, responsibility, and positive change.

About the Role
The Provincial YJC Volunteer and Community Engagement Coordinator is responsible for supporting YJCs with volunteer management and coordination throughout Alberta. The coordinator will support volunteers to ensure they have access to training, best practices, resources, and support to fulfill their role. The coordinator will support YJCs with new volunteers by offering recruiting, screening, interviewing, and onboarding strategies. The coordinator will support new and existing YJC volunteers by developing volunteer processes, resources, tools, manuals, and recognition plans that strengthen Alberta YJCs.
The coordinator will support community awareness and engagement with the public, law enforcement agencies, and crown’s office. By providing educational and informational sessions throughout the province and support current YJCs who promote their program to further the youth diversion reach and garner interest in establishing more YJCs in communities where they do not exist.
The Provincial YJC Volunteer and Community Engagement Coordinator’s primary goal is to support YJCs in developing and retaining a robust pool of volunteers across the province that support current and emerging Youth Justice Committees.
The Provincial YJC Volunteer and Community Engagement Coordinator reports directly to the CYJS Program Director and works closely with the provincial team that includes Government of Alberta, Justice, and Public Safey and Emergency Services Ministries.
What You Do:
Administration
- Develop a provincial volunteer manual to meet current and emerging YJCs needs
- Support recruitment through job postings, applications, screening, and interviewing
- Coordinate, together with YJCs, onboarding and orientation with new volunteers
- Support ongoing volunteer training and skill development
- Maintain records and volunteer milestones
- Provide volunteers support and resources
Volunteer Management
- Develop resources and processes and support YJC’s with recruiting, screening, interviewing, and onboarding volunteers
- Assist volunteers in obtaining and maintaining security checks (CPIC, Child Intervention)
- Maintain volunteer records in database and tracking systems
- Guide YJC committees in maintaining volunteer records
- Coordinate and deliver training
- Develop and support YJC’s with volunteer appreciation and retention strategies
Community Engagement
- Attend community resource and job fairs
- Market volunteer opportunities to communities throughout Alberta
- Represent the Alberta YJC program at events and with community partners
- Support awareness through website and social media
What You Bring:
Competencies and attributes required for success in this role:
- Energetic and self-directed, with effective time management, project management, and organizational skills
- Strong understanding of volunteer services, including recruitment, intake and engagement processes, and best practices
- Program development experience
- Proven passion and experience in supporting volunteers
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills – verbal, written and presentation
- Proficiency in data management, reporting and standard Microsoft office software
- Proven skills and experience managing relationships
Other Requirements
- Post-secondary education or diploma in volunteer management or related field is preferred.
- A minimum of 2 years experience in volunteer management, community engagement, or a related role is preferred
- Experience working within the justice system is an asset
- Clear Police Check including Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Intervention Record Check
- Private and reliable home office with sufficient internet coverage for delivering programming and working from home
- Reliable vehicle for travel
- Ability to work flexible hours (evenings and weekends)
