About Potential Place Society
Potential Place Society offers a restorative Clubhouse environment for adults living with severe and persistent mental illness. It is a community where recovery is supported by meaningful work opportunities, supportive services, and a place of belonging where all contribute. The Society also runs a small affordable-housing program.

Purpose
Serving on a Policy Governance Board, Directors advise on governance matters and oversight, strategic planning, and risk management to achieve the Society mission and promote its values. The Board must exercise fiduciary oversight to ensure financial stability. Directors will help promote the mission and values of Potential Place Clubhouse in the community.
The Director shall
- Attend and participate in board meetings on a regular basis, and special events as available
- Participate on a standing committee of the Board, and serve on ad-hoc committees or undertake special assignments as necessary
- Help communicate and promote Potential Place Society’s mission, model, and programs to the community
- Understand the bylaws, policies and procedures which direct the Society and Board
- Become familiar with Potential Place’s finances, budget, and financial/resource needs
- Get to know other Board members and build a collegial working relationship that contributes to consensus
- Be an active participant in the Board's annual evaluation and planning efforts
- Participate in fund-raising for the organization
Board term
Board Members serve a three-year term and are eligible for re-appointment for one additional term.
Meetings and time commitment
The Board of Directors meets about 6 times per year (bi-monthly) on the last Wednesday evening of the month at our Calgary Clubhouse. Committees of the Board typically meet monthly, pending their respective work agenda. Commitment usually requires four to six hours per month.
Qualifications
Education/Knowledge:
- Education and experience that will benefit Potential Place Society. Areas of greatest need include:
- Mental Health, Policy Development, Financial Planning and Oversight, Fundraising, Community Relations & Communications, Facility Management
- Professional certifications and expertise are assets to the Society but are not required
Personal
- Dedication and drive to improve the lives of adults with mental illness
- Personal commitment to Potential Place’s goals and objectives

A team player with good communication skills
- Empathy for the needs of people with a mental illness and respect for the people who support them
