Established in 1970, Aventa Centre of Excellence for Women with Addictions is a leader in trauma-informed, gender specific, addictions treatment for women. Through a multi-disciplinary team approach, Aventa delivers a trauma-informed curriculum researched and written by Dr. Stephanie Covington. Aventa’s operating funding is provided through provincial and federal Governments; Aventa has been partnered with the Alberta government since 1971. Aventa is accredited with Exemplary Standing through Accreditation Canada.
We are currently seeking an Evening Counsellor to support our Clients during a key transitional time in their treatment day. This role is ideal for human services professionals with experience in addictions, trauma-informed group facilitation, and Client-centered recovery support.
Key Responsibilities
- Client Support: Provide compassionate, trauma-informed recovery support to Clients in a live-in treatment environment.
- Program Facilitation: Lead evening programming including psychoeducational groups, life and recovery skills, individual grounding sessions, recreation activities, and mutual-aid meetings.
- Crisis Intervention: Respond effectively to emotional and behavioural crises; offer immediate support and make referrals as needed.
- Safety & Monitoring: Supervise Client routines and safety.
- Documentation: Complete timely and accurate Client notes, incident reports, and forms in accordance with policy, confidentiality standards, and accreditation requirements.
- Team Collaboration: Contribute to a positive and supportive team culture through regular communication, shift change participation, and involvement in team meetings.
A Typical Evening May Include
- Facilitating a recovery or life skills group
- Supporting an individual Client through grounding or check-in
- Participating in admission or discharge activities
- Responding to Client behaviours in trauma-informed ways
- Communicating shift updates to colleagues via written and verbal reports
Additional Duties May Include
- Observing Client self-administration of medications
- Conducting drug and alcohol screens
- Supporting mealtime routines and Client chore completion
- Ensuring rooms are prepared for new admissions
The Ideal Candidate
Qualifications:
- Must be eligible to work in Canada
- Degree in a relevant human services field; current registration with a professional college is preferred.
- Proven experience working within trauma-informed care, addictions, and mental health settings.
- Experience in group facilitation.
- Commitment to the following Monday – Friday schedule: 2:00pm-10:00pm, except Wednesday and Friday 1:00pm-9:00pm
Skills:
- Strong communication, de-escalation, and crisis intervention abilities
- Empathetic and Client-centered with excellent professional boundaries
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and clinical databases
- Organized, self-directed, and collaborative
Requirements:
- Clear Criminal Record Check and Child Welfare Intervention Check (dated within the last 6 months).
- Current certification in Suicide Intervention and First Aid/CPR prior to hire.
