The Calgary Food Bank is the first line of emergency food support for families and individuals facing crisis. As the city’s main charitable food hub and the most accessible food bank we have the capacity to serve families, individuals, and organizations to fight hunger. Our Logistics and Inventory team was responsible for receiving, handling, and distributing 9.3 million pounds of food last year!

We are currently recruiting five (one full-time and four part-time) community-minded, team-oriented individuals to join our Logistics and Inventory department as General Warehouse Workers. At the Calgary Food Bank, General Warehouse Workers support and maintain the operations of the warehouse through the receiving, shipping, and handling of goods.

We are not your typical warehouse! We work with up to 160 volunteers per day. Volunteers answer our emergency food hamper request line, sort donations, build and distribute hampers, and deliver food just to name a few of the 25 volunteer roles. A key responsibility of this position will be supporting and providing leadership to our incredible volunteers.

Day-to-Day tasks:

  • Providing leadership, support and guidance to the Logistics and Inventory volunteers. This includes providing orientations and instructions, assisting with setting up and stocking of workstations and ensuring volunteers follow all health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Liaise with Volunteer Resources staff regarding volunteer training, scheduling, and assignments.
  • On the dock, loading and unloading shipments of perishable and non-perishable food donations.
  • Safe and proper use of material handling equipment including powered pallet jacks and forklifts.
  • Ensure safe food handling practices are followed including checking expiry and best before dates, quality control and product rotation.
  • Ensure product is received and tracked using the Calgary Food Bank’s inventory management system.
  • Participate in on-going cleanliness and sanitation of warehouse and dock.
  • Building loads for delivery to satellite locations (https://www.calgaryfoodbank.com/depots/) and other community partners.

Experience and Skills:

  • Enjoy working with a wide variety of people and have excellent communication skills.
  • Must be able to make appropriate decisions in a fast-paced environment and be solutions oriented.
  • Confident working with Microsoft Office Suite and basic math skills.
  • Previous warehouse and material handling equipment an asset but not required.

Hours of Work:
One position is regular full-time, working 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, from 7:00 am to 2:30 pm, excluding a half hour unpaid lunch break.

Four of the positions are regular, part-time positions working a maximum of 18 hours per week. Mid-day and evening shifts are available, ranging from 4 to 6 hour shifts, between the hours of  10:00 am and 8:00 pm.

Working conditions are normal for a warehouse environment. Candidates must be able to be on their feet for extended periods of time and carry and move items up to 50 pounds.
