The Calgary Food Bank is the first line of emergency food support for families and individuals facing crisis. As the city’s main charitable food hub and the most accessible food bank we have the capacity to serve families, individuals, and organizations to fight hunger. Our Operations team was responsible for receiving, handling, and distributing 10.8 million pounds of food last year!
We are currently recruiting a community-minded, team-oriented individual to join our Operations department as Transportation Supervisor. This position is responsible for overseeing all transportation services and activities at the Calgary Food Bank. The Supervisor plays a key part in continuously improving operations by implementing new systems and processes to ensure we secure the highest volume of the best quality food at the lowest total cost. Additionally, the Transportation Supervisor is a leader within the organization, ensuring an efficient, safety focused, client-centric, community-engaged, supportive and performance-driven environment.
Last year, the 3 vehicles in our fleet travelled 274,000kms – that’s around the world almost 4 times! By establishing and maintaining good working relationships with suppliers and donors, our Transportation team plays a key role in the Calgary Food Bank, providing quality, nutritious food to clients and community partners.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily transportation operations, ensuring efficient and effective service delivery
- Provide direct supervision and performance management for 14 drivers, along with the Transportation Assistant & Dispatcher
- Develop and implement driver performance management strategies, including coaching and training
- Leverage digital systems to continuously improve operational execution
- Recruit and train drivers (staff and volunteers), ensuring they are aligned with operational needs
- Follow and enforce all Health & Safety & cash handling procedures, including required training
- Promote safe work practices and ensure adherence to Calgary Food Bank policies and procedures
- Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders to improve transportation efficiency and service levels
- Schedule and coordinate routine maintenance for CIFB trucks, leveraging partnerships for donated or discounted services
- Ensure compliance with Alberta Safety Fitness Program and other regulatory requirements
- Educate and engage drivers on compliance legislation, providing necessary coaching and resources
- Facilitate cross-training for staff and volunteers in program delivery
- Serve as an area warden in case of an emergency evacuation
- Participate in the hiring, training, and development of staff
- Ensure adherence to safe food handling procedures
- Proper use and maintenance of equipment
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment
- Perform other duties as required by the Logistics Manager
Leadership & Organizational Culture:
- Lead the transportation team, fostering a proactive and solution-oriented environment
- Identify and implement technology-driven solutions to enhance routing, scheduling, maintenance, donation logging, and record-keeping
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives to streamline operations, create a culture of safety and enhance efficiency
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Organize and prioritize work assignments, ensuring tasks are delegated appropriately
- Interpret and enforce compliance with CIFB’s policies and procedures
- Manage administrative and supervisory tasks, including performance evaluations, job descriptions, and Labor management
- Act as a liaison between team members and leadership to ensure a strong people management strategy
- Manage performance-related issues and collaborate with leadership for support when required
- Support team members in setting and achieving personal training and development goals
- Maintain a focus on health, safety, and well-being of all team members and stakeholders
- Manage the preventative maintenance program for all fleet assets
Tasks Performed:
- Approve timecards for staff on a bi-weekly basis
- Oversee the daily logistics operations pertaining to scheduled drop off, pick up and maintain service level targets
- Oversee preventive and responsive maintenance on the fleet
- Conduct annual performance appraisals for transportation staff
- Build and maintain relationships with donors and depots to ensure timely pickups and deliveries
- Ensure adequately trained drivers are available for prioritized CIFB pickups and deliveries
- Oversee data entry tasks related to tax receipts

- Provide leadership, training, and encouragement to staff, volunteers, and fine options participants
Experience & Education Required:
- Post-secondary education in a related field (Business, Supply Chain, Logistics, etc.)
- Supply Chain credential, (i.e. SCMP) is preferred
- 2+ years of experience in logistics, transportation and dispatching roles
- 5+ years of supervisory experience, preferably in transportation or driver management preferred
Skills & Capabilities:
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
- Ability to set priorities and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Proficiency in computer systems, including MS Office, transport & routing management systems
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage a diverse workforce
- In-depth knowledge of transportation laws and regulations
Hours of Work:
This is an office-based role with regular visits to the co-located warehouse(s). This is a full-time, 37.5 hour per week, 5 days a week, 7.5 hours a day position. Hours worked beyond the regular work week must be pre-approved will be earned and taken as lieu time.
