Time: 20 hours/week 

Wage: $2167 / month (Calculated at $22.75 plus 10% in lieu of pension and benefits =$25/h)

Vacation: 3 weeks vacation, 1 week sick leave per year. 

Overtime: Taken as time in lieu. 

Responsibilities

The communications organizer will be responsible for using digital and communications tools to support the community organizing work of the Calgary Alliance. This role will also provide administrative support for the Calgary Alliance for the Common Good. 

 

A work plan will be developed to further articulate and set out ongoing priorities and, when necessary, modify the responsibilities below.  Key performance indicators are in brackets. The Communications Organizer will either carry out or work with volunteers/staff to support the Calgary Alliance for the Common Good in the following areas:

 

1. Communication/Digital Community Organizing

As a part of the community organizing team, use communications tools to organize CACG members to effectively engage social issues. As an organizer, find, gather and develop leaders.   

  • Social media posts, editing, responding and formatting. (Growth in social media followers)

  • Assist with/edit newsletter and email blasts (KPI: Timely, follow-up engagement, growth in subscribers)

  • Send out press releases and media relations and build relationships with media  (KPI: media coverage of actions and leaders)

  • Update website (KPI: Website is up to date and has information needed by leaders and the public)

  • Manage Nation Builder (KPI: Usage by organizers and leaders as a useful tool)

  • Video production and graphic design, as appropriate (KPI: Beautiful and engaging communication pieces. 

  • Participate in the community organizing process. 

 

2. Development of Calgarians for the Common Good (CCG)

Develop the Calgarians for the Common Good as an organization within the Calgary Alliance that enables individuals to participate in CACG’s organizing work actively. 

(KPI: Growth of the membership of the Calgarians for the Common Good, with a goal of 300 members and financial sustainability. Emergence of Strong Leaders from CCG)

 

3. Fundraising and Events

  • Support event planning and coordination (KPI: Events are well run and supported)

  • Manage registrations. (KPI: Clear registration process that records appropriate information)

  • Assist in managing individual donors. (KPI: Growth in Individual Donors, with team)

  • Thank you to donors under $500. (KPI: Thank you sent out within 2 weeks of donations)

 

4. Operations and Administration

  • Meeting planning and preparation (KPI: Meetings have appropriate support and communications)

  • Manage events/meeting calendar (KPI: Shared Calendar for events and communication of events)

  • Invoicing and membership management (KPI: invoices sent out within a month prior to renewal and reminders sent out after between 60-90 days after renewal date – if not received)

  • Data entry (KPI: Appropriate data is recorded and communicated)

  • Support for projects (KPI: Support for projects is defined in process)

  • Support for bookkeeper and treasurer (KPI: Timely and accurately performed tasks when assigned)

  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

 

5. Lead Organizer support (KPI: As requested, in a timely and appropriate manner)

  • Email management

  • Calendar management

  • Document editing, preparation and organizing

  • Expense reporting

  • Assist with proposal writing 

 

Skills required or willing to learn. 

  1. A strong team member who is self-directed and reliable.

  2. An ability to use Nation Builder website platform.

  3. An ability to use Facebook, Twitter, Buffer and other social media

  4. Graphic design using Canva or other software

  5. Editing and writing

  6. Microsoft Office and Google Suite programs

  7. Email and calendar management

  8. Organization and coordination of volunteers. 

  9. A basic understanding of community organizing 

 

Equipment

If needed, a computer can be provided with the required software that will remain the property of the Calgary Alliance for the Common Good. 

 

Team and Accountability: Reports to the Lead Organizer, and in the absence of the Lead Organizer, a person designated by the Board of Directors. The administrative coordinator will meet regularly with the lead organizer/point person to develop a work plan and prioritize items from the list above and/or other responsibilities as assigned. Works alongside other organizers and community leaders to provide support as appropriate.

 

Termination of Position

This position begins with a 90-day trial period during which either party can terminate this position at any point for any reason. After the 90-day trial. This position can be terminated by either party with two weeks' written notice.
