With the support of Connections, parents with cognitive challenges work to maintain a safe and nurturing home. As a leader in parents’ rights advocacy, Connections provides life-long, in-home support and parenting skills education, financial coaching, group programs, counselling, and community resourcing to families in and around Calgary.

 

About the Role

Connections’ 34 years’ history of providing parenting skills education and family support to parents with cognitive challenges is augmented with a unique Financial Coach program. The position offers an opportunity for a highly motivated, caring individual to be part of a client-centred program that is a leader in the Calgary financial empowerment community and is helping to strengthen families and ensure children are raised in a safe and nurturing home. The Financial Coach will work alongside and in a collaborative way within the Financial Coaching team, providing direct support to families/individuals, and resources to Connections’ In-Home team members to improve families’ stability. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one financial coaching that is holistic in nature, strengths-based and responsive to the client’s learning style and prevailing life circumstances.
  • Liaise with Canada Revenue Agency and other government offices to support clients to access benefits and credits for which they qualify.
  • Support financial education workshops for parents and teens.
  • Liaise with Connections’ In-Home team and provide financial resources and information for families.
  • Represent the Financial Coach Program in community of practice participation and on financial and tax/benefits policy advocacy.
  • Adhere to Connections’ policies and practice standards, including a current police and child welfare check, and fulfill all reporting requirements.

 

Qualifications and Skills

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in disability, social work, counselling or adult education fields, or equivalent experience. 
  • Financial literacy basics are required and a background in financial coaching/advising is ideal.
  • Experience working with people with developmental disabilities and/or in social services or social justice areas is an asset.
  • Able to treat client families with respect while maintaining a welcoming and professional attitude.
  • Crucial soft skills, including an eagerness to learn, dependability, problem-solving capacity and adaptability.
  • Proficiency in case management.
  • Ability to work well as part of a small, interdependent team.

 

Additional Requirements:

  • This position is a full-time (37.5 hours/week) fixed-term contract for 10 months.  
  • During the orientation and training process, this position will work onsite at our office in NW Calgary. Once familiarized with our work and clients, a flexible hybrid work schedule created in collaboration with our team is possible. 
  • A current Criminal Record check (including vulnerable sector screening) and Child Welfare Intervention Record check, the cost of which will be reimbursed by the agency upon offer of employment. 
  • Current First Aid and CPR, or willingness to obtain certification within 30 days of employment.
  • This position requires occasional travel within Calgary, therefore a valid Class 5 driver’s license, a working vehicle, and $2,000,000 liability insurance rated for business use is required.
