Position Summary:

Miskanawah is an Indigenous agency that draws jointly from the strengths and guidance of Indigenous teachings and traditions and culturally-based practices in human services, to support vulnerable children, youth and families.

As an Indigenous Home Visitor, you will provide home-based support to Indigenous families and families who are connected with Indigenous culture with children newborn to age six and pregnant mothers, in order to promote healthy child development; caregiver capacity-building; family resilience; and community connections.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports families in their home
  • Establishes and maintains a trusting relationship with families
  • Applies knowledge of parent-child interactions, child development and the dynamics of child abuse and neglect
  • Facilitates discussions about positive parenting
  • Uses observation skills to identify family needs and implement effective interventions
  • Assist parents in accessing resources
  • Act as a liaison between families and other community agencies wherever necessary
  • Establishes and effectively implements a family support plan with goals, objectives, and activities identified with parents
  • Reports critical incidents to immediate supervisor as per Miskanawah Policy and Procedures
  • Meet with supervisor regularly for supervision on client files
  • Has knowledge of community resources and uses them appropriately to meet the needs of the family.
  • Records home visit observations and activities in a complete, concise, and timely manner as required.
  • Completes ASQ and ASQ-SE assessments with families to inform Developmental Support Plans 
  • Appropriately establishes boundaries and sets limits in relationship with families
  • Assists parents with paperwork needed in applications for program such as medical or financial assistance.
  • Participates in regular staff meetings, case conference, in-service training and other meetings as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Skills and experiences:  

  • Knowledge of and willingness to engage in Indigenous cultural traditions
  • Experience working with families
  • Knowledge and understanding of FASD, healthy child/parent attachment, child development, and complex needs,
  • Commitment to incorporating up to date research-based approaches
  • Ability to take initiative
  • Ability to work individually as well as part of a team
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to respond quickly in a dynamic and changing environment
