Position Summary
The Peer Counsellor at Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre (AARC) plays a crucial role in supporting the clinical team with the implementation of weekly treatment planning for clients. Responsibilities include weekly meetings with an assigned caseload, reviewing client progress, supervising group activities, and supporting clients in group therapy sessions. The Peer Counsellor will also handle administrative tasks such as client documentation, daily process tasks, and reporting to the clinical team.
Responsibilities
- Guide, direct, and teach clients about the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous by sharing personal strength, experience, hope, and knowledge. The primary focus should be on 12 Step recovery experience and competency in counselling clients.
- Assess and report client progress, address concerns, and seek guidance from the assigned Clinical Counsellor.
Qualification Requirements
- Must be actively engaged in a 12-Step recovery program, with a sponsor and a home group. Participation in a Big Book study group is highly recommended.
- Demonstrated dependability through consistent employment or education programming for at least one year prior to application.
- Training and Certification: Successful candidates will be required to complete the following training upon hiring:
- Standard First Aid
- Suicide Awareness
- Self-Harm Awareness
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI)
- Quality Assurance/Outcomes
- Diversity and Cross-Cultural Awareness
- Indigenous Awareness
- Trauma-Informed Practice
- Addictions Education
Previous experience or certification in these areas will be considered an asset.
