In this role, you'll help support the day-to-day kitchen operations by preparing nutritious meals for shelter residents in a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment. The Shelter Cook is responsible for preparing nutritious, high-quality meals for FearIsNotLove client at the Calgary Women’s Shelter, ensuring dietary needs and health regulations are met. This role requires planning, cooking, and serving meals while maintaining a clean, safe kitchen environment.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

  • Ensure meals are planned and prepared in accordance with the guidelines of the Canada Food Guide and client special dietary requirements.
  • Provide healthy snacks for clients during the day.
  • Responsible for cleaning and upkeep of all kitchen appliances.
  • Ensure that proper sanitation and health standards are adhered to by staff, volunteers, and clients.
  • Ensure that the planning and preparation of breakfast for the next day, along with explanatory notes on what food is to be served (preparation notes, etc.), is provided for the staff responsible for serving the meal.
  • Keep records of all meals prepared for licensing purposes.
  • Be cognizant of client’s ethnic food requirements and endeavor to meet these needs.
  • Ensure Compliance with Accreditation Standards; Maintain current police and IRC checks, professional registration (if applicable), and required accreditation-related training (e.g., First Aid, Indigenous, Diversity).
  • Ensure client files meet accreditation standards and agency policies.
  • Other duties as assigned to support FearIsNotLove’s clients and program.

WHAT YOU BRING TO OUR MISSION:

  • Food Safety (Food Handler) Certification
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ professional cooking experience is required.
  • Ability to manage food quality and safety through HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) guidelines.
  • First Aid, and other certifications and ongoing training and development are a required condition of employment.

Skill and Competencies: 

  • Discretion, tact, and the ability to maintain confidentiality is a necessity.
  • Self-motivated with strong self-management ability is essential.
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written) in English.  A second language would be an asset
  • Strong organizational skills with strengths in prioritization and efficiencies
  • Ability to think creatively and resolve problems efficiently and effectively.
  • Team work philosophy of collaboration and cooperation is required.
  • Effective and engaging interpersonal skills.

IMPORTANT DETAILS YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Ongoing training and development is a required condition of this position.
  • A criminal records search and an intervention record check are conditions of employment.
  • If eligible for registration with a professional body, registration must be current.
  • In accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada.
