Family Literacy Facilitator

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Family Literacy Facilitator is responsible for facilitating CanLearn’s Magic Carpet Ride program for parents/caregivers and their preschool-aged children at community sites in Calgary. Magic Carpet Ride is a family literacy program with a strong adult learning focus. Its primary goal is to help parents and caregivers build the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills to support their children’s early literacy and early childhood development. Parents/caregivers and children attend together for one two-hour session each week. This is a part-time, hourly contract position; the schedule depends on program and community-site requirements.

Responsibilities:

• Facilitate engaging, welcoming weekly two-hour Magic Carpet Ride sessions for parents/caregivers and preschool children at community sites.

• Use adult learning principles to help parents/caregivers understand early literacy, language, and early childhood development.

• Model practical strategies parents can use at home through shared reading, conversation, songs, rhymes, play, and everyday routines.

• Create opportunities for parents/caregivers to practice strategies with their children and reflect on how to use them at home.

• Select inclusive, culturally responsive books, activities, and materials and create a warm, strengths-based, low-barrier learning environment.

• Monitor parent/caregiver learning and family progress and contribute to program evaluation.

• Collect and report attendance, learning, and program information accurately and on time.

• Prepare program materials and collaborate with community-site partners and CanLearn staff.

• Participate in staff meetings and professional development as appropriate.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

• Post-secondary education in education, early childhood education, family literacy, adult education, community development, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.

• Knowledge of early literacy, oral language, emergent literacy, and early childhood development.

• Knowledge of adult learning principles and experience supporting parents/caregivers as adult learners.

• Experience facilitating groups with parents/caregivers and preschool-aged children is an asset.

• Understanding of family literacy and learning through play, relationships, books, conversation, songs, and everyday routines.

Skills

• Strong group facilitation skills and ability to engage adults and young children learning together.

• Ability to build respectful relationships with families from diverse cultural, linguistic, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

• Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal, and time-management skills.

• Ability to work independently at community sites and collaboratively as part of the CanLearn team.

• Flexibility to travel to community program locations in Calgary.

• Energy, warmth, creativity, and commitment to continuous learning.
