The Opportunity
We are looking for a skilled communications specialist who can help us with content creation, storytelling, and project execution across digital and traditional media channels. In this role, you will be instrumental in producing compelling communications materials that will inspire community support and donor engagement for the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Reporting to the Manager of Marketing, the Senior Communications Specialist supports the strategy, creative development, production, and distribution of internal and external Foundation communications. Working as a collaborative member of our team, you will support the fundraising strategies of the Foundation by focusing on the development of meaningful written and digital communications that effectively recognize, inform, and educate new, current, and prospective donors.

Key Responsibilities
In your role as the Senior Communications Specialist, you will focus on the following core responsibilities:
- Research, write and produce compelling stories, articles, donor profiles and scripts that reflect the Foundation’s mission, values, and impact. This will include developing content for print, digital platforms, and third-party materials, and adapting these materials to align with platform-specific formats for email, social media, and advertising.
- Interview patients, families, hospital experts and donors to capture authentic, emotionally resonant stories. Contribute compelling content to the annual Country 105 Caring for Kids Radiothon.
- Support the strategy and execution of robust marketing campaigns and initiatives aligned with Foundation priorities.
- Work collaboratively with members of the Marketing team to develop integrated content packages.
- Assist in content development – including speaking notes and key messages – and coordination for media events, presentations, donor recognition activities, and hospital engagement efforts.
- Build a thorough understanding of the cause and our funding priorities to develop compelling case for support materials for the Alberta Children’s Hospital and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI).
- Manage timelines for communications deliverables to ensure projects are completed on schedule and meet quality standards.
- Maintain organized content files, editorial calendars, and messaging documents for cross-team collaboration.
- Contribute to the successful implementation of the Foundation’s strategic plan, including the Communications annual operational plan.
- Work cooperatively and effectively with other members of the Foundation team to advance the mission in a collaborative, integrated manner.
As our ideal candidate, you have:
- Five (5) years of progressive experience in a communications, journalism, or marketing role, with a focus on the development of written content. Strong writing, interviewing, and editing skills are required for this role. A portfolio demonstrating the excellence of your writing, storytelling, and content development, including examples of writing for all media, will be required for all those selected for interview.
- A well-developed understanding of fundraising communications and the role of storytelling in philanthropy. Specific experience producing donor-facing stories and content that inspire engagement and giving is required. Previous experience in a hospital foundation/health care environment would be considered an asset.
- A post-secondary degree or diploma in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field. Suitable combinations of education and experience will be considered.
- Proven success in interpreting, synthesizing, and translating complex and/or technical information into simple, compelling language.
- Direct experience with content creation for various mediums including web, social media, and print. Broadcast production, script development and writing for digital platforms are all considered assets.
- Highly collaborative with strong interpersonal skills, able to work effectively with cross-functional teams, and contribute to evolving campaigns and strategies. Ability to engage and build trust with diverse stakeholders including families, hospital staff, donors, volunteers, and media.
- Well-established project management skills with the ability to manage multiple demands in a dynamic and time-sensitive environment. Ability to work independently in articulating and driving new initiatives or enhancing existing programs.
- High-level proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word, along with content management systems and digital storytelling platform. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and social media tools is considered an asset.
- Ability to work flexibly both in office and virtually, with experience working on virtual platforms like Teams and Zoom.
- Willing and able to work occasional evenings or weekends as required to support events/initiatives.
