Hours:                 37.5 hours per week (including evenings and weekends)

Position Summary: 
 
Miskanawah is an Indigenous agency that draws jointly from the strengths and guidance of Indigenous teachings and traditions and evidence-based practices in human services, to support vulnerable children, youth and families.  
 
Working in close partnership with the Diamond Willow Youth Lodge team, the Senior Youth and Cultural Support Worker supports the development and facilitation of customized programming for youth. This position provides leadership by modeling best practices, supporting staff through difficult or complex situations, and ensuring daily operations are carried out effectively and in a timely manner.

Responsibilities:  

  • Act as a role model for both staff and youth 
  • Respect, advocate and protect the rights of youth
  • Acquire resources needed to enhance and improve program delivery
  • Provide education and strategies to youth through multiple mediums
  • Provide referrals and support for youth to access other programs and services
  • Create and facilitate youth led programs and activities
  • Ensure daily, weekly, and monthly structured documentation is completed in a timely and professional manner to support program planning, reporting, and evaluation
  • Mentor and guide the team in communication with youth and families
  • Mentor and support the team in addressing issues, challenges, or concerns
  • Seek out learning opportunities for the team to help strengthen team capacity
  • Support the team in skill development while serving as a knowledgeable resource
  • Connect with Elder’s, Knowledge Holders to support the planning and facilitation of programs and activities
  • Provide timely and clear communication and direction, and delegate tasks appropriately to support coordinated team efforts.
  • Serve as a source of support, inspiration, and a champion for the program
  • Facilitate daily team check in meetings
  • Report critical incidents to immediate supervisor as per Miskanawah’s Policies and Procedures

Skills and experiences

  • Experience with planning and facilitating youth programs 
  • Knowledge and understanding of how systems such as the child welfare system and justice system negatively impact Indigenous people 
  • Knowledge and understanding of FASD, healthy child/parent attachment and complex needs 
  • Creativity  
  • Ability to take initiative 
  • Ability to work individually as well as part of a team 
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing 
  • Ability to respond quickly in a dynamic and changing environment
  • Ability to be flexible while working between two locations and programs 
  • Competency in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel and Outlook 
  • Competency in completing daily admin tasks accurately and on time

Requirements:  

  • Experience in the planning and facilitation of youth programs
  • Knowledge of and willingness to engage in Indigenous cultural traditions 
  • Experience working with youth and/or young adults ages 11-29
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours including nights, and weekends 
  • Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check 
  • Child Intervention Check 
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with 2 million dollars liability insurance 
  • Reliable vehicle
