Position Summary:
Miskanawah is an Indigenous agency that draws jointly from the strengths and guidance of Indigenous teachings and traditions and evidence-based practices in human services, to support vulnerable children, youth and families.
The Planet Youth Lead works closely with the Miskanawah Manager, Planet Youth Coordinator, and the Planet Youth Team at the United Way of Calgary to develop an Indigenous parallel to the Planet Youth model. This role will work to build relationships with Indigenous youth, community partners, and Elders in order to develop innovative strategies that will improve the lives of Indigenous youth in Calgary. This position will be responsible for ensuring Indigenous youth voices are heard and represented throughout the development and implementation of the Planet Youth project.
Responsibilities:
- Lead research and data gathering, community stakeholder engagement, project communications, and resource development activities
- Work collaboratively with the Indigenous Parallel team to adapt the Icelandic model to meet the needs of Indigenous youth in Calgary
- Oversee staff to ensure work is being performed according to established standards
- Facilitate coalition meetings and community engagement sessions
- Build an Indigenous coalition of community members to support the development of culturally grounded strategies based on youth voice
- Work in community to build relationships with youth, Elders, schools, and youth supporting organizations
- Act as an advocate for Indigenous youth
- Provide mentorship to Youth Elders as they work as role models at schools and in community
- Work collaboratively with Indigenous Research team to develop and implement parallel to Planet Youth survey
- Liaise with Elders and Knowledge Keepers to ensure Indigenous knowledge, ceremonies, and practices are included in Planet Youth
- Engage and consult with Elders throughout the development and implementation of the Planet Youth project
- Ensure the strategies are implemented in accordance with youth and community voice
- Attend agency leadership meetings and ensure important communication is shared with staff team
- Ensure outcomes data is collected and reported accurately
Skills and experiences:
- Experience facilitating youth programs
- Experience leading teams
- Practical experience & understanding of Indigenous ways & cultural protocols
- Willingness to learn and understand the Planet Youth Icelandic Framework
- Knowledge and understanding of inter-generational effects on Indigenous families (inter-generational trauma)
- Competency in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel and Outlook
- Good organizational and data management skills
Requirements:
- Knowledge of and willingness to engage in Indigenous cultural traditions
- 3-5 years’ experience working with youth
- Child Intervention Check/Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
- Valid First Aid or CPR certification
- Indigenous Awareness Training
- Diversity Training
